Cutting-EdgeHenri Bergson addresses in his essays that it is the nature of mankind to create tools shaped by its human form and action to evolve in adaptation to its context.

If artifacts are a reflection of a human form, whether it is made out of organic material or not, it may be considered as a living element that by nature follows the rhythm of a cycle. Designers can assist this through the integration of a design practice that considers materials, currently perceived as waste, to be an opportunity that will sustain communities and industries into the current context.

Cutting-Edge investigates the potential for developing products and building bridges between entities that will benefit from the reuse of waste selvedges produced by the UK’s weaving mills.

The textile industry inherently produces tons of blended waste material, however, only a small percentage is adapted to be mechanically down-cycled into fiber.

The objective of this project is to encourage alternative initiatives to the destruction of waste selvedges generated by shuttle-less looms and avoid direct incineration of valuable materials (merino wool, cashmere, silk).

To facilitate the re-use and re-manufacturing processes of this waste, this research operates from its sorting phase to its potential transformation into a viable product. I am exploring design protocols that allow for irregularities of this material to be processed on an industrial level and to play an essential role in the perception of standardised design outcomes.

Acknowledging the value of waste material may potentially push conventional entities to build connexion with a disruptive system may it be through production or consumption. This way I got involved both in a typical design practice, which means trying to adapt the manufacture equipment to an efficient and valuable collection of the waste to be later on creatively remanufactured into a new product.

	Raschel’s Fantasy

Through lace curtains, Raschel’s Fantasy captures an uncanny skyline in the context of hyper-globalized
megacities. By drawing on their cottage-like aesthetic, the work exposes the anachrony of these
mass-produced objects, revealing them as both cultural remnants and metaphors for Today’s ultimate
aspiration.

Installed in the context of Schloss Hollenegg, the piece invites viewers to reflect on themes of heritage,
nostalgia, and the tension between utility and ornamentation. It transforms the act of looking—both
inward and outward—into a dialogue between tradition and modernity, the local and the global.Historically, lace curtains, technically known as Raschel curtains, embody the evolution of regional
heritage and its transformation through global industrialization. Traded since the 17th century, lace
symbolized the dominance of European production centers, asserting cultural and economic power on
the world stage.

As industrialization advanced, lace became one of the first post-industrial textiles to be protected
through labeling practices, reinforcing the leadership of England, Belgium, and France. By the 1960s,
however, its production shifted beyond Europe, predominantly to China, unifying its once-regional
identity under the forces of globalization. What was once a marker of power and sophistication became
a mass-produced, nostalgic token of a bygone era.

Through its recontextualization, Raschel’s Fantasy prompts a rethinking of these seemingly mundane
objects, revealing them as windows into complex histories and contemporary narratives.

Set of two shelves with backlit lace insets.

Recently, I’ve been exploring the relationship between lace and light through hybrid objects. Since mechanical lace is often used for curtains, I use it here as a kind of screen. Like a theatre of objects, these shelf-lamps become small windows or “silver screens.”

I enjoy playing with the contrast between the raw, industrial quality of steel and the delicacy of the lace’s intricate patterns.

	CARMO

CARMO armchair was designed to bring the comfort of the bedroom into a living space.

Its wooden structure takes inspiration from traditional Japanese futon beds, while the generously padded cushion wraps around it like a soft, oversized duvet. The result is a relaxed accent piece that invites casual, cozy seating.

It is also the first Zara Home armchair to feature a removable seat cover, thought to offer a more sustainable and adaptable design. This approach allows the brand to refresh the fabric over time, introducing new options and creating coordinated sets.

A key goal was to address the challenge of material separation in upholstered furniture which represents a major barrier to recyclability.

The armchair was designed to be washable, changeable, and easy to disassemble, supporting long-term use and repair while allowing for eventual recycling at the end of its life cycle.

Several iterations of the CARMO armchair were explored throughout the design process. It began with a simple square wooden frame, joined at clean angles, over which the cushion wraps around it and fasten at the sides, as if the chair is wearing a puffer jacket. I wanted to capture the intention of the brand to bridge the gap between fashion and interior.

	MYLOS

MYLOS table was designed to showcase a new recycled stone developed in collaboration with our supplier in China.

This design was chosen to expand the brand’s offering by introducing a lightweight stone table. Given that the material’s resistance is not as high as conventional stone, I opted for a compact coffee table design that would also work well in smaller bedrooms, while still maintaining a sculptural presence.

The minimal structure was intentionally selected to highlight the essence of the stone, with chiselled raw edges that evoke the feeling of a piece extracted from the quarry.

Raschel's fantasy

Raschel’s fantasy

Raschel’s fantasy is in line of the last project called Future Ghosts. It continues to explore the ability of textile surfaces to capture the influence of the architectural landscape on the creation of a normalized imagery of the housing form. I found in this overlooked filtering curtain an expression of a nostalgic flight back to an idealized past, used to cope with the eclectic feeling of the city. Introducing the concept of the globalization of the local context, this personal version of this textile object acknowledges both sides of the window as one communicative space, defined by the projection of socio/cultural background. Playing with the juxtaposition of multiple archetypes of past to future architectural models, it reflects the ambiguous feeling of attraction. It creates a contemporary imagery of the cityscape fantasy, where the single-family cottage house shares the space with multipurpose tower blocks and modernist houses. Here, it catalyzes the situation of the European capital, Brussels, but this can be applied and understood globally.
